OKLAHOMA CITY -- While most of downtown Oklahoma City is deserted, workers are staying busy at the National Memorial.

Executive Director Kari Watkins said crews have been monitoring the winter storm since Thursday and how it's affecting the grounds. Workers are also taking extra steps to protect the Survivor Tree.

"They've been out there all morning beating the ice off the tree," Watkins said. "The sleet we had yesterday is what really saved us."

Watkins said crews were beating ice off the Survivor Tree for more than 24 hours during the 2007 ice storm.

"We were lucky this time," Watkins said.

The Memorial Museum is closed Friday, but the public is still welcome to walk on the grounds of the memorial.
