Fatal Shooting Began with Seat Belt Violation, Failed Traffic Stop

An officer involved shooting that left one officer injured and the suspect dead started with an attempted traffic stop for a seat belt violation.

OKLAHOMA CITY – An officer involved shooting that left one officer injured and the suspect dead started with an attempted traffic stop for a seat belt violation.

Officer Daniel Godsil attempted to pull over Tremall Anderson near N.E. 13th Street and Kelham Avenue for a seat belt violation Saturday evening. Anderson failed to stop causing Officer Godsil to engage in a pursuit.

The pursuit continued onto Martin Luther King Boulevard before the suspect turned onto N.E. 23rd Street.

Officer Kris Hunter had deployed "stop-sticks" on 23rd Street in an attempt to deflate the suspect's tires. As the suspect vehicle drove past Officer Hunter, the driver fired multiple shots, sticking Hunter in his left arm.

Anderson proceeded another two blocks before stopping near NE 23rd Street and Hood. Then he exited his vehicle and began shooting at Officer Godsil. Officer Godsil returned fire striking the suspect.

Anderson, died from his wounds sustained during the shooting at OU Medical Center.

Officer Hunter was released from the hospital on Monday, January 12 after a successful surgery.

Officer Godsil has been placed on paid administrative leave and Officer Hunter is currently on medical leave recovering from his injury.
