Weight Loss Myth Busters In Time For Healthy Changes in 2010

A New Year; time to make a clean slate. If your resolution is to lose weight take a moment and make sure you realize that lasting weight loss is achieved by making healthy changes in your lifestyle. After time, these changes will become second nature and you'll be surprised to find them easy to do and easy to live by. Weight Watchers has debunked some of the most controversial myths about weight loss, and provides some real tips to help you get started.

MYTH: Cutting out food groups will help you lose weight

Initially, because you're no longer eating the additional calories from that food group, such as bread, you may experience weight loss. But over time as you start to miss sandwiches for example, it becomes too hard to resist and you overcompensate by eating more bread than you normally would.

Tip: Try to incorporate all food groups by visualizing your plate in three sections: Half filled with fruits and vegetables; one-quarter whole grains; and one-quarter lean meat or protein.

MYTH: Losing weight means cutting sugar and fat and eliminating foods like pizza and ice cream

The key to long-term success with weight management is figuring out how to fit in your favorite foods with moderation and portion control. Depriving yourself of the foods you love will cause you to resent the restrictions and go back to your old habits.

Tip: Plan your indulgences. For example, on the day you want to enjoy pizza for dinner, eat a lighter lunch, or increase your activity. Many people who have lost weight and kept it off track what they eat by writing it down, so they can plan ahead and be aware when making decisions..

MYTH: Fresh produce is better than frozen or canned

If you're buying from your local grocery store, fresh produce may not be the best option as it sometimes sits out for days. Some vitamins are lost in handling and transportation, whereas frozen or canned vegetable are packed at the peak of freshness and their nutrition is preserved. Opt for fresh fruits and vegetables from a farmer's market and if you choose frozen or canned, make sure there isn't added sodium.

Tip: What's on sale - whether fresh, frozen or canned - is the best bet these days. Those who understand that by increasing your vegetable and fruit intake can help keep you fuller longer are often most successful in losing weight. Many fruits and veggies have a higher fiber content and lower calorie count and can help to keep hunger at bay. Tasty smoothies made with frozen fruit, ice, and skim milk are a great healthy treat. Never underestimate the power of some crunchy carrots and celery with a fat free dip to snack on.

Try this renovated recipe to put your new tips in action. It utilizes frozen veggies or fruit and can be a delicious, cost effective way to get started on changing the way you eat this year! Enjoy!
