STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The campaign to cast out one of Oklahoma's youngest mayors moves forward. The Payne County Election Board has verified 107 signatures on a petition to oust Stillwater's mayor Nathan Bates.
The petition accuses Bates of corruption including using his position for personal benefit, interfering with police officers on duty and asking a woman to expose her chest.
Bates told NEWS 9 last week that the claims are unfounded.
"The truth is there's not a whole lot I can respond to because I haven't done it and it's hard to explain actions I didn't do," said Bates.
The mayor has 10 days to officially respond to the allegations. After that, the mayor's critics must get at least 650 signatures on another petition to force a recall election.
