OKLAHOMA CITY – SandRidge Energy is giving the former Kerr-McGee building an makeover.

Company leaders say renovations are under way in the building and plans are being drafted to improve the area around the downtown skyscraper.

"We've completed the renovation of floors 17 through 27 and are working hard on our top two floors currently," said Marsha Wooden with SandRidge. "One of the things we are focusing on is opening up the city block we own and surrounding properties for the public to enjoy."

Several of the buildings next to and across from the tower will come down to make way for open space and a new building.

The company also plans to give Kerr Park a much needed makeover.

"They are in the process now for the redesign of the park but they are going to make it a green and engaging space for the city and employees," Wooden said.

SandRidge's renovations come as Devon Energy begins construction on a new 54-story skyscraper in downtown. But Wooden doesn't see Devon's project as competition.

"We are both undertaking major projects that are a great benefit to the city," she said.

The renovation of Kerr Park is a joint effort with Chesapeake and the city and will be designed by native Oklahoma architect Rand Elliott.
