OKLAHOMA CITY -- Outdoor enthusiasts showed their support at Lake Overholser on Sunday for the MAPS 3 temporary one-penny sales tax extension.

MAPS 3 would include funding for 57 miles of new public bike and walking trails throughout the city connecting all three city lakes and the Oklahoma River.

Supporters said it's a necessary step to improve the health of metro residents.

"The more trail systems there are the more people get out and walk, run, ride a bicycle, enjoy this great Oklahoma outdoors, and get healthier," said Hal McKnight, Oklahoma City Advisory Committee Chairman.

The total cost for the eight projects of MAPS 3 is $777 million, but it would not raise taxes from the current rate. Opponents have said that's too much to spend during a slow economy.
