OKLAHOMA CITY -- Weight Watchers members are hoping to double their pounds lost, but not only for their own benefit, but also to help others.

For each pound lost, a pound of food is donated to fight hunger.

Last year, local Weight Watchers groups donated 6,000 pounds. This year they're hoping to reach 10,000.

At each Weight Watchers meeting, ladies are learning a new lifestyle while working to drop pounds. But this week it's more than just their weekly weigh-ins providing motivation -- they're helping fight hunger.

"When they carry in a 10 pound bad of something, they realize, 'Wow! I was carrying that on my body,'" Weight Watchers Leader Judy Theissen said.

Each pound lost, is one pound donated. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is packing up close to 2,000 pounds of food at one location, so that they can send it to those in need across the state.

"If you can just donate a can, there are people in your community who are going hungry and need your help, and it just takes one can, one donation, to help feed someone's belly," Angie Gaines with the Regional Food Bank said.

Demand at the Food Bank is 50 percent higher than it was this time last year. Many families who never thought they would be in need -- are suddenly hungry.

"There's one family actually who used to donate," said Gaines. "Both the parents had jobs, and then the mom lost her job. Three months later, the dad lost his job. They went through their savings and now they're turning to the Food Bank for help."

In this Lose for Good campaign, Weight Watchers members are fighting hunger by making smart choices second nature.

"We have some members that bring in, not just the weight they lose during the seven weeks of the campaign, but that bring in the amount of food that they've lost total," Theissen said.

There are 55 Weight Watchers locations are participating in the campaign in the western half of Oklahoma. Next year, they're hoping to donate even more.
