OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s often easy to take things like a bed, dishes to use for dinner and a television for granted, but the folks at Christmas Connection know these necessities are luxuries for some in our community.

One mother understands all too well living without essentials.

“When I first got out here, I was having a lot of problems. I couldn't get any help from nobody, I mean I was really crying. I didn't know what to do,” said Genya Williams.

Genya Williams moved to Oklahoma with nothing and every given day was a constant struggle to survive.

“I was like OK, what am I going to do for furniture? My babies are sleeping on one little twin mattress,” Genya Williams said.

Williams is one of many mothers living in poverty and barely making ends meet.

“We were sleeping on a bed, a twin mattress and looking at a little bitty, I mean little T.V. We had nothing but a bed and a T.V., no dishes, nothing to eat off of unless we go to one of these stores to ask for a paper plate or something because we didn't have any help,” Williams said.

This mother of five had nowhere to turn until she found the Christmas Connection.

“The volunteers, the workers is what makes Christmas Connection,” Williams said.

They’re her only family in Oklahoma, the new loves of her life who helped her start anew.

“They always see me crying and stuff and they always say ‘Give me a hug, it's OK.’ By the time I left, I had a smile on my face,” Williams said. “Every time I've been there, no matter who I talk to, it's been wonderful no matter who, or what the situation is about. It's like everybody is treated as a whole.”

The Christmas Connection helps thousands of families like Williams across the county with furniture, clothes, everyday needs often taken for granted and every bit makes a huge difference.

Genya Williams said she’s still is worried for her little ones but she's humbled by her blessings and continues being a pillar of strength for her children by making the most with the little she has.

“If it wasn't for them, we'd still be struggling trying to get you know something to sleep on,” Williams said. “Before you think about throwing anything away, think about the Xmas connection because there are families out there that are doing way worse than I am that need way more things.”
