OKLAHOMA CITY — Firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire at the Park Forest Apartments near SE 44th Street and Sunnylane Road Wednesday night.

Red Cross said 16 units were damaged, four of those were completely destroyed. Several families are now without a home, but the Red Cross is taking care of them for the night to make sure they have a place to stay.

The apartments are located at 4328 SE 46th Street. Sunnylane Road between 45th and 47th streets was closed will fire crews tried to control the blaze.

Someone living in the Park Forest apartments called 911 shortly after 5 p.m. to report the blaze that spread to at least eight apartments.

Fire crews said it appeared to start in a lower level apartment.

"The fire was leaping out of the window and went up into a second story window, caught that second story apartment on fire and the fire did spread to about four units in that area," said Oklahoma City Fire Batt. Chief Brian Stanaland.

One resident suffered heat exhaustion and was treated by medics on the scene. No other injuries have been reported.

It’s unclear what started the fire.
