OKLAHOMA CITY – It could be weeks before the average Oklahoman is able to get an H1N1 vaccine, Oklahoma City-County Health Department officials said.
Oklahoma County received 4,000 vaccines this week and plans to distribute them to healthcare workers and children at schools with high rates of absenteeism, department spokesman H.R. Holman said. The county expects it will be at least a few weeks before the vaccines are distributed publicly at clinics.
Schools with high absentee rates are targeting by the CDC to get the vaccine in hopes they stop the spread of the virus, Holman said.
Officials are finalizing which schools will receive vaccines from this first dose.
The shot version of the vaccine could begin arriving in the state as early as next week, so pregnant women and others not able to take the mist could begin getting it then, Holman said.
