OKLAHOMA CITY -- Trainer Bernell Rhone has been training since the late 1970s and this weekend he is on the verge of a milestone achievement.

Rhone has 999 career training wins.

"I just never thought of having 1,000 wins until somebody brought it up to me. For me it was always an unreachable deal," Rhone said. "When I think back I have been at it a long time and I have been lucky."

Unlike his competitors, Rhone runs a modest stable that in some years has barely had 10 horses in competition.

"Until just a couple of years ago I didn’t even have a large number of horses. I would always just have a 10-12 horse outfit," Rhone recalled. “But I do race year-round and that adds up over the years."

Rhone has won three races during the Remington Park season thru Friday, September 25.

Next month, Rhone plans to enter two-time stakes winner Perfect Bull in the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on October 11. The bay son of Holy Bull recently finished second in the Prairie Meadows Derby and won over the Remington Park surface last year as a two-year-old.
