Staff and Wire Reports
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Two small school districts in southeast Oklahoma are closed this week because of absences due to flu-like illness.
Roff schools in Pontotoc County will close Wednesday and Haworth schools in McCurtain County closed Monday. Officials say both schools could reopen early next week.
The Roff district has about 340 students and Pontotoc County Health Department administrator Michael Echelle said 140 missed school Monday because of illness. Echelle said the district will be closed through at least Monday.
McCurtain County Health Department administrator Rhonda Dennis said some students in the Haworth district have tested positive for swine flu. Dennis said absences in the district, which has about 580 students, grew to 20 percent on Monday.
In the last two weeks, schools in the metro have also had their fair share of absences. Putnam City said about 805 students were out and Edmond is reporting 516.
Norman schools say 202 students were out last week. Mid-Del reports 719 cases of kids and staff with flu-like symptoms since the beginning of the year.
Oklahoma City did not respond to requests about flu absences.
Health experts will be on hand to discuss the H1 N1 virus and the new flu vaccine tonight at Northwest Classen Auditorium from 6 to 7 p.m.
