NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Norman police said a 2-year-old was scratched by a lynx Monday afternoon at the Little River Zoo.

The young boy wandered too close to the cat enclosure and the wild cat scratched the boy on the face and head through the fence.

The child was transported to Norman Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The child's name has not been released.

Zoo officials said an incident like this has never happened but they plan to learn from the experience. They are investigating the incident internally to make sure this doesn't happen again.

The 45-pound lynx is also being monitored. Zoo officials believe the cat was trying to be playful, but are checking her behavior as a precaution.

The Little River Zoo, located on over 50 acres on SE 120th Avenue, has over 350 animals.
