OKLAHOMA CITY -- It's a frequent stop for many and now every time you pull into Sonic for a drink, you have the chance to help Oklahoma teachers.

Limeades for Learning is a national grant-making initiative. When you buy a drink at Sonic you will be able to vote for your favorite public school teacher's project online. Then Sonic will give away money to the teachers whose ideas get the most votes.

Centennial High school students are among the first to benefit from the grant program. One of their English teachers was awarded a check, which he will use for new books.

"I'm wanting some college prep texts, and I'm also wanting some Oklahoma texts so that I can have the students understand more about the heritage of Oklahoma," Lynn Green of Centennial High School said.

Each week for the next five weeks, Sonic will be distributing money to public schools across the country. In the end, $500,000 will be awarded.

"After you buy a sonic drink, you will see on the cup there's a number, you peel it off, you go online, you can go to any city, any school, etc. that you want to check and see if the teacher has applied for a grant," CEO of Sonic, Cliff Hudson said.

Wilson Elementary music teacher Neil Kellogg applied for a grant and now the pre-K through fifth-grade students will be able to record clearer podcasts.

"We've done some podcasts before using older technology, and this is going to make it a lot easier for the teachers to put something together quickly and get it on our Web site for people to see and hear," Kellogg said.

The program will last until the beginning of October. With one drink purchase, you get one vote online. And you don't have to get a limeade; you can buy any drink you want.
