OKLAHOMA CITY -- When you buy food products that are made in Oklahoma, you're supporting local agriculture. But if you buy "Made In Oklahoma" paper towels, you're supporting hungry children in Oklahoma.
The paper towel sales have already generated big bucks for kids. The program to sell the paper towels only started a few months ago and already Oklahomans are choosing to buy the local product over other brands.
Across the state on store shelves you can't miss the prominent red letters on the end of the aisle display.
"We are now in almost 98 percent of the stores in Oklahoma," David Brooks with the Made in Oklahoma Coalition said.
Thousands of hungry children take home backpacks from school every weekend. Sacks are inside, stuffed with meals from the Regional Food Bank.
"Each Friday kids take home about 7,000 backpacks filled with child-friendly food that don't have to be prepared, that they can eat in their bedroom," Brooks said.
Since June, the sale of Made In Oklahoma paper towels in the state has generated $11,200. That total is enough money to allow for 56 more children to have the food they need after school.
"I just think that supporting the Regional Food Bank will help out in the long run," shopper Jamie Cofer said.
Last year the Made In Oklahoma Coalition donated $18,000 to the food bank through other programs. With these paper towels on the shelves, they'll be able to give five to six times more this year.
