BLANCHARD, Oklahoma - Blanchard Mayor Greg Shupert is accused of punching his wife in the face, according to court documents filed Monday.

Shupert, 50, was charged Monday in McClain County District Court with the misdemeanor of domestic abuse in the presence of a child.

"It brings a little more attention to this case simply because it is the mayor," McClain County Assistant District Attorney Steve Pevehouse said.

Shupert allegedly pulled up into his driveway next to his wife's car and began hitting her in the chest. His wife told police when she began to kick back, Shupert fell to the ground and then got back up and hit her in the face, according to the probable cause affidavit.

"We take domestic abuse seriously," Pevehouse said. "Whenever the facts warrant it, and they meet the level of a domestic abuse statute, we will file that case."

Shupert did say he'll decide in the next few days whether to resign from the Blanchard City Council.

Mayor Shubert was released on a recognizance bond. One of the conditions of that bond was that he has no contact with his wife. According to the Blanchard City Hall Shupert is still on the job.

Shupert's arraignment is slated for Friday in McClain County District Court.
