OKLAHOMA CITY - A mother is accused of stabbing her baby and leaving him in a trash can at a southwest Oklahoma City convenience store.

Latasha Harmon was arrested on complaints of assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse.

Sgt. Gary Knight said residents called police after midnight Friday saying a mother was stabbing her baby near a Circle K store at S.W. 59th Street and May Avenue.

Police arrived to find the woman walking naked along the street and say they followed a trail of blood to the trash can where the baby was found inside, crying.

"As officers began canvassing the area, they located the baby at the bottom of a trash can, next to a gas pump," Oklahoma City Police Lt. Jeff Cooper said.

Police were told a man tried to stop the woman and he was cut as well. He was treated at the scene.

Early reported indicated that the baby was stabbed with a needle, but police later determined it was not a needle. Sgt. Knight said police have not determined what was used.

The baby was transported to a hospital. His condition is not being made available because he is a victim of child abuse.
