Oklahoma River Hosts Wakeboard National Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the first time, the Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships is setting up shop at the Oklahoma River.

Thousands are expected to join in on the action this weekend, but it's not the only event rolling into Oklahoma City and onto the river.

The pros said the way the river is shaped is part of the reason why this competition comes back for more.

"It gets a little windy sometimes, but water looks good now so I'm excited to ride,"said Pro wakerboarder Melissa Marquardt.

Marquadt is one of the top pro wake boarders battling out in this high flying water sport for a national title on the Oklahoma River.

Oklahoma being a landlocked state venue seemed to be suitable for its shape.

"As you can see, the river is actually tucked in and shielded from the wind, so it's a great site to hold this type of event," said WWA Event Spokesperson Mike Weiss.

As top pro wakeboarders hailed from all over to see who rules over the water, the river itself seems to be reigning in recognition on its own.

In June, the roar of drag boat engines echoed down the river and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett declared 'Olympic Day' by the Chesapeake Boathouse.

In May, tri-athletes took on the turf as well.

"We're such a young venue the Oklahoma River is a young river and more people looking more towards it to host their events," said Oklahoma City spokesperson Kristy Yager.

Most of the events kick off during the summer and as for future events, there aren't any more expected until the fall.

Competitors say they aren't too concern about the Oklahoma River water since May's triathlon left many athletes sick and a city spokesperson said the conditions have improved since the event due to lack of rain.
