GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -- A tough economy has horse owners giving up their animals in increasing numbers. The Horse Feathers Equine Rescue in Guthrie has seen a 20 percent increase in requests from owners wishing to surrender their horses. Cheri White Owl started the rescue in 2006.

"This year, we've reached capacity. I get calls and e-mails almost daily from people who can no longer afford their horses. We wish we could take more, but we don't have the space or the funds. We now have a waiting list," White Owl said.

In many cases, the neglect of cash strapped owners leaves the horses with permanent scars, like Jack who was left to fend for himself.

"Jack's owners left him behind after moving because they didn't have enough money. When we found him, he had a stick in his eye. We don't know if it was on purpose or an accident. It got infected and our veterinarian had to surgically remove it. That's why he doesn't have an eye. It's heartbreaking," said rescue volunteer Kathryn Miracle.

While the need for the rescue is at a high because of the economy, donations are at a low because of the economy.

"Many of the foundations have also shut their doors, so we can't even apply for as many grants," the equine rescue owner said.

In addition, hay and grain prices have risen. It's why the rescue is looking for both donations and volunteers. They are also hoping good families will adopt the horses that have been rehabilitated. That's the only way volunteers can take in more who need a home.

"I think the coolest thing is seeing how they've gone from maybe really skinny and nervous around people to completely friendly and people oriented," Miracle said.

The equine rescue is asking for monetary donations along with the following wish list:
-tractor
-good quality hay/feed
-safe pastureland
-monetary donations
