Staff and Wire Reports

OKLAHOMA CITY - Paramedics issued the first heat alert for central Oklahoma this afternoon.

By noon, EMSA has provided treatment to five adults with symptoms of heat related illness. Three of the patients were transported to local hospitals in good condition.

Heat alerts are issued with EMSA responds to five or more heat-related calls in a 24-hour period and the hot weather is expected to continue.

Hazy, hot and humid weather is expected to continue through this weekend. Any chance of rain remains less than 10 percent.

Oklahoma City may tie or break a record today. The highest temperature ever recorded on this date is 101 degrees set back in 1934.

Symptoms of heat-related illness include muscle cramps, heavy perspiration, headache, nausea or vomiting, faintness or fatigue.  Persons exhibiting symptoms should move inside to a cool place, sip small amounts of water (drinking too much can cause nausea) and contact their doctor or call 911 for help.

To avoid heat-related illness paramedics urge Oklahomans to

  • Reduce outdoor activity,
  • Avoiding exercise during the day,
  • Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water (limiting caffeine intake)
  • Wearing lightweight, light colored clothing, and
  • Visiting a cool place like a library, indoor shopping mall, community center or church (if there is limited or no air conditioning in the home)
