OKLAHOMA CITY -- As the number of H1N1 cases continues to grow, the panic and fear is fading.

Scientist at OU's Health Science Center believes they have found elements in flu viruses that never change, which could lead to better vaccines.

While public fear of the virus is dwindling, it remains on the minds of those who study influenza's like those in Dr. William Hildebrands lab.

"We really don't know what this flu is going to do," Dr. Hilderbrands said.

Like any virus, the H1N1 flu has the ability to mutate and Dr. Hildebrand worries if that happens, next fall could be the real threat to the public.

"That will give us some tall tell warning signs as to what we're going to face in terms of late 2009 and early 2010," Hilderbrands said.

The work being done at Dr. Hildebrands office recently gained national attention after their work was published in a well respected science magazine.
