May is bicycle safety awareness month. Make sure you follow these rules for both cyclists and motorists.
Rules for cyclists
- Ride with the traffic not against it
- Ride on the street, not the sidewalk
- Ride as near to the right-hand side of the roadway as is safe - new OKC ordinance
- Signal when turning or stopping
- Every bicyclist is an individual, on group rides each must stop for traffic signals and signs
Rules for motorists
- Give cyclists at least 3 feet when passing - now law in OKC as of April
- Wait for a cyclist to pass before turning right or left
- Check for bikes a driveways, crosswalks, bike paths as well as at street intersections
- Always check your blind spot and signal before turning
- Watch for cyclists who may be "wrong way riding" against traffic at intersections
