CRUTCHO, Oklahoma -- The Crutcho School district is hoping to shed its historically negative image as the lowest rated district in Oklahoma County.

Administrators, teachers and parents have started a grassroots movement to raise the district's low standardized testing scores.

"We have to raise them," said Assistant Principal Yolanda Alexander. "We're on a plan of improvement. We've had state department in here three times this year doing extensive evaluations on our programs and our teachers."

While the state focuses on teachers and programs, Alexander has turned her attention to parents.

"I'm making phone calls," she said. "There are days I make 40 phone calls a day."

Parent Duana Newcomb hopes to get other parents excited about the school.

"I would like to see every person be involved in the schools," she said.

Newcomb thinks the key to helping the school is improving the students' neighborhood. She is searching for donations to help build a playground and basketball court at the nearby Riverside Mobile Home Park. More than half of the Crutcho's student body lives in the low income neighborhood.

"If we keep kids out of trouble where they live, they'll be out of trouble more in school," Newcomb said.
