Woman Shocked by Response From 911

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A metro woman said she was absolutely terrified that someone broke into her home while she was sleeping, but she was even more shocked by the response she received from 911.

There was a communication mix-up with the 911 call that resulted in a delayed police response and now the woman is packing some security of her own.

Jacqueline Freeman called 911 after seeing a burglar inside her home Sunday morning making off with her flat-screen television.

"I grabbed a robe and I started telling them I was coming out," Freeman said. "I was going to get them, get out of my house."

Moments after her initial call to 911, a neighbor called.

An officer responded, but never stopped.

"I was outside on my porch waving the officer down and he just drove off," Freeman said.

Oklahoma City police said it appears to be a miscommunication. If the officer was dispatched to a prowler call, he would have been driving around looking for a suspicious person.

"You investigate that a little differently than a burglary," Sgt. Gary Knight said. "With a burglary, you typically make contact with the resident of the home."

About 40 minutes later, another call was made to police. Freeman said it was at least an hour before an officer came to her home.

"You can certainly pick the phone up and call 911 again just immediately," Knight said. "Let them know here you are. Apparently, she did everything right."

Freeman said she doesn't blame police and understands there was a mix-up.

Meanwhile, she's making repairs to her home from where the burglar broke in and for the first time in her life, she's purchased a gun.

"I have to be in a situation where I feel like I can at least protect myself," Freeman said.

Freeman is also taking classes so she can learn how and when to use the gun.

Freeman said the second officer who showed up was very nice and took her report, however, they did not catch the burglar.
