NORMAN, Oklahoma -- An extra check from the government is heading to Social Security recipients in the near future.

Stimulus money is starting to flow. It's an exciting prospect for individual recipients as well as scam artists.

In a couple of months, most Social Security recipients will get an extra check, part of a one-time economic recovery payment.

"It'll be $250 per person," said SSA District Manager Dennis Purifoy. "That's for example a couple will get $500 if each of them gets a social security check."

Clients at the Moore Social Security office know about the checks, and know what they plan to do with them.

Scam artists have been at work ever since the Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed, through fraudulent letters, emails, and checks. They mainly target retirees and seniors.

"If somebody calls them and says I need your bank information, I need to verify your date of birth or social security number or something like that, you can rest assured, that's a scam," Purifoy said.

The stimulus money will flow automatically to the recipients. They don't have to do a thing, except watch out for the scams.

The Social Security checks will be mailed out starting in early May.
