OKLAHOMA CITY -- Captain Bill Pierce is leaving his position as Assistant Principal of a metro grade school, to serve his country in Iraq.

Both faculty and students of Wiley Post Elementary participated in a celebration of the school leader who has put his service before himself.

Students at Wiley Post Elementary packed in to recognize their courageous Assistant Principal.

"They care a lot about him," said Charri Stratton, Library Media Specialist. "He's made some great relationships in the past year he's been here."

Pierce is going from a Putnam City school administrator, to a United States Air Force Captain in Iraq, deployed overseas from Tinker Air Force Base.

He said he's ready for the challenge, but not looking forward to leaving so many behind.

"Every one of them is a good kid," Pierce said. "We have no bad kids here. Every one of them is good."

Captain Pierce is known for his work ethic at the school. He's dedicated to his duty as disciplinarian, but through those duties he's connected with the children, and now he's their biggest ally.

"He's very supportive of the kids," Stratton said. "He really tries to help them, more than just telling them they do things right or wrong."

"He just really tries to help them and build them up."

Captain Pierce's wife said she's not surprised about the large turnout for the celebration.

"I feel proud," Cindy Pierce said. "I feel proud for him, for the love that everyone has shown today."

Captain Bill Pierce leaves for Iraq on Wednesday.
