PAYNE COUNTY, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to a downed plane Thursday off of Highway 177, near 92 Street and Washington Street in Payne County.

The plane crashed around 9 p.m. Thursday. OHP confirmed one died around 9:30 p.m. The identity of the person killed in the crash has yet to be confirmed.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro says the twin-engine Cessna 337 went down around 8:45 p.m. near a pond about eight miles south of Stillwater. Molinaro says the pilot was the only person on board the plane.

He says officials don't know where the plane was coming from but it was headed for Stillwater.
The name of the pilot wasn't released.

According to FAA registry records, the plane is registered to George C. Waller Junior of Stillwater. It was manufactured in 1968.

Molinaro says federal investigators will head for the crash site, probably tomorrow morning.

He says information they gather will be turned over to the National Transportation Safety Board, which will be in charge of the investigation.
