OKLAHOMA CITY -- One of our state's finest paid a visit to local elementary students who he said have helped him from half a world away.

The students have written letters to Iraq, including letters to one of the first graders' family members. While he was on leave, ‘Uncle Jim' as these first graders call him, paid them a little visit to say thanks.

"Seeing their eyes as soon as they walk in they're like ‘Hey!'" MSgt. James Mogren said.

For the last few months, these first graders and Oklahoma City's Bodine Elementary wrote letters to Master Sergeant James Mogren. Mogren just came back from Afghanistan and during his short stay he wanted to show these little faces and his niece what happens half a world away.

"We also help build schools, government facilities and roads," MSgt. Mogren said.

"It feels kind of hard for our family, but you know he's fighting for us," first grader Haley Lloyd said.

These kids may look young but they understand the meaning behind the uniform.

"To keep those people safe so they can be protected from the people who are bad," first grader Christiana Abbitt said.

Through the bad and good times, Mogren carried a flag with him that he gave to the students, a token of appreciation for the words that got our hometown heroes through the tough times.

"Sometimes I feel kind of sad and stuff so when I see you guys' letter and when you guys send this mail, that really helps us out a lot, emotionally and in our hearts, that helps us," Mogren told the students.

Master Sergeant Mogren was home on two weeks leave, but will be leaving this weekend to head back to Afghanistan for several more months. He's expected to come home sometime in August.
