OKLAHOMA CITY -

Firefighters saved two men early Monday morning when a wind-fueled grass fire suddenly surrounded their home in northwest Oklahoma City.

Around 12:45 a.m., firefighters rushed to N.W. 150th Street and Rockwell to fight a 40-acre grass fire. Strong winds between 30 to 40 mph pushed the flames toward a large, two-story home occupied by two brothers.

Fire crews say the brothers couldn't leave by themselves because of the flames and smoke. Firefighters rescued the men, and no one was hurt. Unfortunately, the fire damaged their home.

The battalion chief says the fire, wind and dry conditions weren't the only things they had to worry about while battling the flames. They also had to contend with the dark.

"These brush crews driving out across these pastures [were] trying to get to the fire," said Oklahoma City Fire Battalion Chief Mike Walker. "This has creeks running through here, so all of those things coupled together, it could have been far worse than what it ended up being."

Crews extinguished the fire and left the scene by 6 a.m. Firefighters don't know what started the grass fire, but they are almost certain that it started out by the road on N.W. 150th Street.
