A human skull and bones were found on Sunday by hikers near the bank of the Arkansas River west of Tulsa, county officials have confirmed.

A couple told Tulsa County Sheriff deputies they were walking in the woods near 4900 West 12th Street and came upon what they believed to be human bones scattered around.

When they discovered a skull with an apparent bullet hole, the couple called 911.

Tulsa County investigators confirmed the remains are those from a human, but decomposition is keeping them from determining race or gender.

TCSO Sgt. Travis Jones said, at this time, deputies cannot confirm the hole in the skull was caused by a bullet.

"There is a hole in it," he said. "I cannot say whether it's a bullet hole or what kind of hole.  It will be up to the medical examiner."
