OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A lawmaker doesn't want the governor to delay tax refunds to help the state cope with budget difficulties.
State Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City, is proposing a measure to require that refunds be mailed within 30 days of receipt of a tax return. Reynolds says the bill is needed to prevent tax refunds from being withheld in what he called a misguided attempt to deal with the state's budget shortfall.
But a spokesman for Gov. Brad Henry says the governor has no legal authority to delay state tax refunds. Spokesman Paul Sund says that even if Henry could he would not order a delay.
Reynolds says his bill will provide families with certainty and prevent the kind of financial mismanagement that has wreaked havoc in other states.
