Lawton officers cleared in suspect shooting

Associated Press - December 1, 2009 1:25 PM ET

LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - The Comanche County District Attorney has determined two Lawton police officers were justified in shooting a man who they say raised a gun at them last week.

District Attorney Fred Smith cleared officer Rachel Flores and Sgt. Buddy Poe to return to duty Monday after reviewing a report by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown says the officers shot and wounded 22-year-old Victor Corpuz on Nov. 24 after being called to investigate a reported assault.

Brown says Corpuz was armed with a BB gun and raised the weapon at the officers as they approached him and refused their commands to drop the gun.

Corpuz was hospitalized after the shooting, but Brown says he's expected to recover. He has not been charged.
