Edmond High School Student Works to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A group of young people is celebrating Pink Ribbon Week at a high school to raise awareness about breast cancer.

A group of girls at Santa Fe High School are painting away, with everything pink in honor of a cause that affects thousands of people every year across the country.

"I like helping people, it just makes me happy knowing I can help someone," Victoria Stephenson, Pink Ribbon Club President, said.

Pink Week is here and the brainchild behind the Pink Ribbon's Club all started from a show with a pop star.

"On New Year's Eve they showed a Miley Cyrus surprise," Stephenson said. "They were surprising this girl, Allison, for what she did for the Pink Ribbon Club and that really inspired me."

With the help of teachers and friends Stephenson started the first club of its kind in an Oklahoma high school. It's growing every year with more than 60 members joining at Edmond Santa Fe High School.

"It's wonderful to watch kids become so enthusiastic about a cause," Chelsea Foo, Pink Ribbon Club Sponsor, said. "I believe everybody is touched by this disease and I think it's important to raise awareness, so when this opportunity was given to help particularly young women to become aware and become part of their lifestyle."

Over the last year, the club has raised money through bake sales and fundraisers. The high school senior just found out a few weeks ago breast cancer can affect 'young' women including teenagers.

"I was shocked, I actually did a self exam as soon as I found out," said Stephenson. "I was like 'Oh, I gotta check and make sure I'm not getting it'".
