LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - A Comanche County jury has acquitted a woman of second-degree murder in the death of her baby boy.
The panel of 5 women and seven men deliberated 75 minutes before finding Julie Burt-Gibbons not guilty just before 6 p.m. yesterday.
Burt-Gibbons was charged in the Dec. 28, 2007, death of her 3-month-old son, Ransom Gibbons, who died at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City from head injuries.
Burt-Gibbons told authorities the child was injured after falling off a bed, but prosecutors contended the child was hit or shaken since he suffered injuries to both sides of his head.
Defense attorney John Zelbst had argued that the child didn't have the external injuries to support the claim that Burt-Gibbons had caused the fatal injury.
Burt-Gibbons spent nearly 17 months in custody.
