Back forces longtime prosecutor to retire

Associated Press - May 17, 2009 5:45 PM ET

LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - The district attorney that has represented two southwestern Oklahoma counties for the past 22 years plans to retire at the end of the month.

Robert Schulte was first elected as the prosecutor for Comanche and Cotton counties in 1986, when he defeated incumbent Dick Tannery, and hasn't drawn an opponent since then.

Schulte has submitted his resignation to Gov. Brad Henry, who will appoint a temporary replacement until an election can be held.

Back problems are forcing Schulte to step aside on May 29.
