OKLAHOMA CITY – The statistics are disturbing: one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime – 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner.

Eighty-five percent of domestic violence victims are women with women ages 20 to 24 at greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner abuse.

Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.

October is Domestic Violence Prevention Month, and the Oklahoma City Community College will host activities in Relationship Violence Awareness Week, October 11-15.

• October 12 – Warning Signs – Hear about warning signs of relationship violence at 12:30 p.m. in College Union 1. This educational program will explain what to do when others need help in the case of sexual assault, violence, hazing, bullying and more.
• October 13 – Silent Witness – Get information and learn the goals of Silent Witness including remembering, awareness and advocacy. The display will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the College Union.
• October 13 – Relationship Violence – Learn the signs and how to help a friend during the presentation by Erin Walker, YWCA Outreach and Volunteer Services director at 12 p.m. in College Union 1.
• October 14 – Self Defense – Learn how to protect yourself during the session with speaker Lt. Kevin Johnson, Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, at 12:30 p.m. in College Union 3.
• October 15 – Service Day at the YWCA

Boxes will be available across campus to collect items for women and children at the YWCA shelter.

Needed items for children include:

• new underwear and socks of all sizes, diapers and baby wipes
• cups with lids (sippy cups)
• bottles
• plush toys, learning-based toys; multi-cultural dolls
• children's music CDs
• children's craft kits
• hard and soft-backed books and more

Needed items for women include:

• under garments
•  bath products
• bath linens
• bed linens
• pocket-sized appointment books/calendars
• umbrellas
• cooking utensils
• cleaning tools and products
• toiletries and hand sanitizer
• curling irons and blow dryers
• notebooks and journals
• taxi vouchers and more
