Fun Facts About Vance AFB

  • Commander Eileen Marie Collins, who graduated from the Vance Air Force Base in 1979, was the first woman to command a space shuttle mission.
  • Enid, Oklahoma is home to the state’s oldest symphony orchestra. The Enid Symphony Orchestra began in 1905.
  • The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma, located in the city, has one of the prime collections in the United States of railroad objects.
  • A city with a long history of baseball, Enid’s Majors youth baseball team won the American Legion Baseball World Series in 2005.
  • Enid has more AMBUCS members than any other city in the nation. AMBUCS is a national charitable service organization whose aim is to bring freedom to those with disabilities.
  • The city partners with Northern Oklahoma College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University so that its residents have access to beneficial higher education.
  • Enid was once the home of Geronimo Motor Co. It was incorporated in 1917 but closed not very long later in 1920 due to a large factory fire. The old automobile is usually showcased at city events or parades.
  • Once named “Skeleton Station,” legend has it that M.A. Low, a vice president and general counsel for Rock Island named it “Enid” after the poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center Museum

Voted a 2012 Outstanding New Attraction in Oklahoma, the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center stands on one of the most famed spots in Chisholm Trail. The Heritage Center celebrates the spirit of the Cherokee Strip pioneers through engaging exhibits and living history events
