Road Trip Oklahoma visits Cushing

Cushing, Oklahoma is currently known as the "Pipeline Crossroads of the World," but at its inception in 1841, it was a small agricultural town whose main business was cotton. Founded by a government trader to the Sac and Fox Nation, Cushing was named for the private secretary to the U.S. Postmaster General at the time, Marshall Cushing. More>>

Fun Facts About Cushing

  • Cushing is home to the World's Largest BBQ Smoker which is used each year at the BBQ N Blues Festival. It weighs over 12 tons.
  • The 13 Oil Storage and Distribution Companies in Cushing store over 40,000,000 barrels of oil on a daily basis.
  • In the early days of Cushing, the existing Post Office was stolen in the middle of the night and was moved to its current location because a group of citizens felt the business community was located in the wrong part of town.
  • 1912, Tom Slick "hit" the first oil well in the area, the Wheeler #1, twelve miles northeast of Cushing and the Cushing Oil Field became a boom area. The United States supplied about 90% of the energy needs to the Allied Forces in World War I and a 20% of that energy came from the Cushing Field.
  • Outlaw Al Jennings and his gang robbed the Crozier and Nutter store, in Cushing, of $15 in 1897.
