Road Trip Oklahoma pulls into Mustang

Road Trip Oklahoma continues with a stop in Mustang, Oklahoma. Known as "A city with a vision", Mustang is within one of the fastest growing counties in the state. Mustang was established as a city in 1969 with a population of about 2,600. Today, Mustang boasts a population of more than 17,000. The city has an active community center which includes a public library, aquatic facility, and other recreational activities for families. More>>

  • Mustang became a township in November of 1901 and has been growing ever since. The town grew from just under 200 residents in the 1960s to nearly 18,000 today, Gaining nearly 5,000 residents in the last 10 years, Mustang is fueling the growth of Canadian County one of the fastest growing counties in Oklahoma.
  • Mustang Schools is one of the fastest growing school districts in the metro; with more than 900 employees, it is the largest employer in Canadian County. The latest bond issue with more than 80% support will add nearly $30 million in improvement to Mustang High School.
  • Mustang Town Center is one of only two centers in Oklahoma with a library, community center, fitness center, senior center under one roof, along with a water park, sports fields and city park on the same property. City officials statewide have visited to learn more about Mustang's successful model.
  • The Western Days Festival, is one of the largest events in the County drawing over 30,000 people. The event consists of a rodeo, a parade, a carnival, a fun run, and dozen more events. Mustang will also host the Mustang Grand National car show Labor Day of 2012. The last time this event was held $1.6 million was spent and 25,000 attendees came to see over 500 Mustangs.
  • The Chisholm Trail, which passes through the Northwest corner of the city, saw 10 million cattle, 1 million horses, and 35 thousand cowboys on their way to Kansas. Residents have told stories passed down through their families about feeding the cowboys.

Luigiano’s is a hidden gem in Mustang. This Italian restaurant is a favorite of locals. Many people host pizza parties in the casual atmosphere.

10:30am - 11:30am & 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Town Center

This community center has walking trails, duck pond, baseball and softball fields, Frisbee golf, gazebo, aquatic center and an airplane memorial.

  • 10:30 – 11:30am – Lauren and Christina will show the people at the Senior Citizen Center a thing or two during Casino Day
  • 4:00pm – 5:00pm Watch live reports with Gary England and Lauren Nelson, and enjoy a fun Meet & Greet
  • 5:00pm – 6:00pm Alex Cameron will join Gary with live reports, come out to meet both.

Community Visits

LD’s Specialties and Gourmet Cafe

From 12:00pm - 1:00pm have lunch with Kelly and Amanda. Amanda Taylor and Kelly Ogle will eat lunch at the Tea Room to visit with city leaders. This quaint restaurant is a Mustang original. It’s well-known for its sweet tea and delicious sandwiches.

Community Center Weather Presentation

From 1:15pm - 2:30pm, Oklahoma’s number one Meteorologist, Gary England, will teach kids about Oklahoma weather during an entertaining and informative weather presentation.

Mustang High School

From 8:30am - 10:00am, Robin, Stan and Jed will join several high school sports for their practices on Thursday morning. We’ll see who still has it when they air the piece on Friday morning!
