Road Trip Oklahoma arrives in Shawnee

After the Land Run of 1891, early settlers named their town Shawnee, named after the Shawnee Indian tribe. Starting with a population of approximately 250 in 1892, this town has continued to grow with a current population of over 29,000. Children's Barnyard

Join Christina Eckert and Lauren Nelson as they experience the Pottawatomie County Free Fair Children’s Barnyard. The barnyard will be filled with several hands-on exhibits this year, from a petting zoo to a butterfly exhibit.

Van's Pig Stand

Van's Pig Stand is a local legend serving up BBQ, fresh cut curly Q fries and vanized potatoes that bring people back time and again.

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is a hands-on art and science museum, dedicated to enriching and inspiring children of all ages by creating fun learning opportunities. Founded in 1914, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is one of Oklahoma’s oldest museums. The collection contains 8,000 years worth of art including ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Native American, African, Oceanic, and Eastern art and artifacts, and art from the Middle Ages through the early 20th century.

Shawnee Middle School

Michael Armstrong will teach kids about Oklahoma weather during an entertaining and informative weather presentation. Val Castor will join in on the fun with a special presentation.

Chamber Luncheon

Amanda Taylor and Kelly Ogle will participate in a special noon discussion meeting of the Chamber of Commerce at Gordon Cooper Technology.

  • Shawnee is home of the first SONIC Drive-In prototype which originally opened in 1953 as the Top Hat Drive-In. In 1959, the name was changed to SONIC. In 2005, Shawnee became home to the 3000th SONIC Drive-In as well.
  • Shawnee lays claim to "water-garden capital of Oklahoma" thanks to the ingenious efforts of Pond Pro Shop, the largest water gardening store in Oklahoma! Pond Pro Shop features an impressive on-site display of water gardens and is well worth the visit.
  • World-famous Round House® Overalls are manufactured right here in Shawnee! Shawnee Garment Company has been the proud Maker of Round House® for more than 100 years. In fact, they hold the world record in the Guinness Book for the world's largest pair! Round House® Overalls are proudly worn by all Disney World™ train conductors and have also been spotted on celebrity Jessica Simpson.
  • The Santa Fe Depot houses the Pottawatomie County Historical Society and Museum. Built in 1904, the Depot is the last of its kind on the old route to the West. The buildings Romanesque style resembles a castle and provides a memorable backdrop for photo enthusiasts. In fact, it is one of the most photographed buildings in Oklahoma.
  • Brewster Higley’s final resting place is in Shawnee. Higley penned “home on the range” but it was after Higley’s death that the poem was set to music and became famous. Higley’s family never received a dime of royalties from his efforts.
  • Shawnee’s oldest dwelling, the Beard Cabin, is located at the Santa Fe Depot. The log cabin was built in 1891 by John Beard, a founder of Shawnee and namesake for Beard Street. Actually…history tells us John’s daughter, Etta Ray, did as much or more of the building than he did.
