Fire Destroys over 100 Structures in Midwest City

MIDWEST CITY -- A large wildfire destroyed homes and threatened surrounding neighborhoods in Choctaw and Midwest City Thursday.

Donate to the American Red CrossOriginally firefighters estimated at least 100 homes were destroyed, but this morning Midwest City Fire Marshal Jerry Lojka said it appears around 100 total structures were lost.

"This is far above and away the most difficult fire we've had to deal with," Lojka said.

Lojka attributes the shifting, high winds to creating a difficult task for firefighters.

"It's leap frogging so far and advancing that we can't, we run out of water," Lojka said. "We're coordinating the efforts...it's very, very difficult."

Many neighborhoods lost mulitple homes, while other remained in tact. Families have been surveying the devastation and trying to pick up the pieces, even if its small mementos that survived the blaze.
